Question

USB 3.0 ports work every OTHER time I start my PC (Win 10)

Feb 23, 2016 6:32PM PST

I recently upgraded my wireless network adapter to an ASUS USB-AC56 802.11ac and ever since then I've noticed that all 3 of my USB 3.0 ports have only been working every other time I start up my computer. My previous network adapter used a 2.0 port, and I've tried the 3.0 adapter on other computers to test if it's a problem with the adapter and I don't believe it is.
Whenever it fails to work, I go into the device manager and it doesn't even detect the 3.0 ports. I've tried searching for updated drivers and firmware for my motherboard with no success. I've tried uninstalling the devices in device manager and letting Windows reinstall them.
I've checked event viewer and have found several errors, but Google hasn't found any relevant search results for any of the text that I'm reading.

My current motherboard is an MSI 970A-G43 (MS-7693).

I hope I've provided enough information for someone to help me out. The really distinct thing for me is that it only detects the 3.0 ports every OTHER time I start up my computer. If any further information is needed (event viewer logs, etc.) please let me know and thanks in advance for any help!

Clarification.

I thought I was pretty clear, but I'll try to explain it differently.
I turn on my computer.
The usb 3.0 ports work.
I turn off my computer.
I turn on my computer.
The usb 3.0 ports do not work.
I turn off my computer.
I turn on my computer.
The usb 3.0 ports work.

They alternate between functioning and non-functioning every time I turn on my computer. They don't even get detected in device manager when they don't function. I hope this helps.

Check at MSI for your model to see

If they issued drivers for motherboard and USB for Windows 10. These drivers are not automatically retrieved or installed by Microsoft.

Do these ports work every time if you test with some other type device....like a cd unit or hdd?

They do not. They aren't even detected in the device manager, which initially led me to believe it was a hardware problem, however the fact that it happens every other time makes me reconsider.

Do these ports do the every other time thing if nothing is connected to them?

Did these ports ever work every time?

If w10 was the free upgrade from some other os you might want to check with msi for updates to the other os.

Did you notice the 1-11-2016 BIOS?

"Fixed WHQL test fail."

Since it's a boot oddity, then there's this item.

After that you are looking at calling them to report the issue.

I didn't notice the 1-11-2016 BIOS, what does that mean? Was there an update to the BIOS that might have had an impact?
Either way, I think someone else helped me find the answer. Thank you though! Would like to know more if you believe it to be relevant to my problems.

Fixed!
Feb 26, 2016 12:03AM PST

I've only restarted twice now, but it seems to have fixed the problem! I can't believe I didn't think to check the Win 7 drivers since this was initially a Win 7 OS. Duh, I'm an idiot. Thank you so much!

PS - first time using this site, is there a way I can mark this response as the solution or to mark my question as being solved so that others can find it?
