USB 2.0 Hub Heat Issue

May 27, 2005 4:07AM PDT

I have a IOGear GUH274 and whenever I plug it in it gets really hot after a while. My USB 1.1 hub doesn't get hot, is it just because it's 2.0 or is my hub faulty?

You don't mention what peripheral(s) you have plugged into the hub, nor if you are using the auxillary power supply.

Heat means current, and excessive heat means excessive current. If you do not have a power-hungry peripheral (possibly a defective device) connected, then I suspect a defective (shorted) hub. In any event, I would get the hub off of the system immediately --especially if you are operating on bus power only. You should not be drawing more than a few hundred ma from the bus, else you might damage the ports in your system, probably on the mobo.

I don't have anything attached, using bus power. If it were using an excess of power wouldn't windows warn me and disable the device? Isn't there somewhere where ma from the computer can be measured?
