Usage Cap issues with AOL Broadband (UK)

Dec 6, 2008 12:54AM PST

Just wanted to start by saying that, just for the record, I'm actually DiningInHell/DanielInHell from the chat (and I've had a few calls played), I joined the CNET community over a year ago with this old name, and I can't change it to the one I now use.

Anyways, with all the recent controversy of ISP usage caps (mainly Comcast, if I'm right), I've had my own issue with my ISP recently. I live in the UK, and my ISP is AOL Broadband (and they have been our ISP since we got our first computer over 10 years ago). To reward our loyalty with them, they've recently upgraded our service. It's quite a good deal, up to 8Mbps (we realistically get 6Mbps) for around

Um... 40GBs?

Man, I'm jealous, here in Australia, I have 1.5Mbps, and a 12GB cap, and it's quite a bit more expensive. Although there is a 40GB cap, taking up the issue with them really depends on if you're ever going to hit that cap. If you're not hitting it, I wouldn't worry about it, and if you're only hitting it maybe two or three times a year I wouldn't worry, it'd probably be more hassle than it's worth. While I am in no way a lawyer or anywhere near one (I'm an IT student at Uni), if it's going to be a problem all the time it's worth addressing, otherwise, it's probably more effort than it's worth.

40GB...ya rly.

It's not that we'll use 40GB, we want to use this as an excuse to terminate our contract with AOL without paying a fee, they're not a very good ISP, and since we've been using the new router they sent us, Vuze hasn't been working, which leads me to think that I'm being filtered.

I'm in Australia, but on 25mbit adsl2+ with a 100GB cap. But I sure pay for it, $130, which is about $85 US.

Well,

I don't have that kind of money to spend every month on internet, and I wouldn't use it all quite frankly. I think 20GB would be more than enough for me, I doubt I'd even use that, I'd just like the speed.

I can of think it saves money. Spend so much time on podcasts and online tv shows I don't need cable tv for one.

AOL really is filtering
Dec 8, 2008 3:22AM PST

I've just checked their official message boards, AOL filtering P2P connections is all over the internet. I think we're gonna switch providers...
