May 1, 2005 11:14PM PDT

FINDINGS OF US REPORT

A forensic examination of the car found 11 bullet holes, and that a trajectory analysis showed they all came from one point of origin - implying that only one man had shot at the car.

But the document acknowledges that "due to it being their first full day on shift," the soldiers "lacked experience in issuing operational orders and in battle tracking security forces during execution of blocking missions".

Italian report to query US claims

Italy says its report into the death of secret agent Nicola Calipari, killed by US troops at a roadblock in Iraq, will show many disagreements with the US.

The document reportedly accuses the US military of "tampering with the incident scene" and removing evidence.

Italy refused to agree conclusions with the US after a joint inquiry into the shooting and observers say relations have rarely been more strained.

Websites published a seemingly full US report after restoring censored parts.

The Italian foreign ministry said it would release its findings at 1600 GMT on Monday, adding that it would show clear differences from the US conclusions of the joint inquiry

Public opinion in Italy right now is so anti-American that it would be political suicide for the gov't to agree with the US no matter how airtight a case was made.

I'm sure it's a vast US conspiracy, and we can therefore

discount the report. People might start to think the US is right.

Ummm, satellites capture a lot of images. I'm sure it takes time to process the data, and to think of the possibility that the data exists.

Because of security considerations...

It is interesting to note that the Italian driver himself stated that he heard the warning shots and that he SPEEDED UP

(U) Mr. Carpani told Sergeant First Class Feliciano who Ms. Sgrena was and that he was trying to get to the airport. He told Sergeant First Class Feliciano that he heard shots from somewhere, and that he panicked and started speeding, trying to get to the airport as quickly as possible. Mr. Carpani further told Sergeant First Class Feliciano that he continued to speed down the ramp, and that he was in a hurry to get to the airport.
(Annexes 91C, 136C).

IF you do download it you might note that hidden within it is mention of GPS measurements and if you know anything at all about GPS you can (or should be able to) grasp the significance. Photo recon (and that includes satellite imagery) image exposures have a "shutter-time" that always results in a little blurring of a moving object. By knowing the "shutter time" and measuring the actual length of the blur, an incredibly accurate measurement of speed can be conducted. During hours of darkness this blurring is particularly clear. The technique is well known to those codifying "photo finishes".

You are welcome.

Warning shots are your interpretation of events. The Italian agent said he heard shots form somewhere.

The road to the airport is very dangerous and many terrorists are on this road. He spead up because he thought terrorists were firing.

Yes indeed and not just her. It is widely known that the insurgants are not using tanks, Bradleys, Hummers, PT 76s, BMPs, BRDMs nor any other armored military equipment of the sort.

The vehicle's occupants have already admitted at various times that yes, they saw the lights before any shots were fired, and yes, they heard the warning shots after seeing the lights and SPEEDED UP, and yes the driver stepped on the brakes AFTER the vehicle was engaged by "the tank" which they had obviously seen or they would not have recognized it as such.

May 2, 2005 1:32AM PDT

Sorry, I must be stupid or something, but this whole scenario just rankles me big time.

All those people out there that keep saying that the US military did something horrible and mean in this situation must have no ability whatsoever in regard to empathy. I have never been in the military, or even in a situation that could come close to such an incident; BUT, after I first heard of this I could not help but try and place myself in the position of the guards at the checkpoint. Try to play out that scenario in your mind - a vehicle is coming toward you. It is coming fast. You wave your arms wildly. You flash lights. It keeps coming. You have a kazillion thoughts going through your mind of car bombers and such. What do you do? What does your training tell you to do? What are your orders? Is there any reason why you should just step back away from your position and let this vehicle come through if you have no information that it is not hostile? Why aren't they slowing down? What should I do!!?!!

MY GOD!!! I cannot imagine what went through those people's minds during those few seconds in which a decision had to be made!! And here we sit in the comfort of our homes/offices typing away with complete and smug satisfaction that we know what we would have done and what should have been done.

******!t!!

May 2, 2005 3:59AM PDT

of what they were thinking and doing and while reading it be aware, as the soldiers manning the checkpoint were, that for the period 1 Nov 2004 to 12 March 2005 the "attack density" is 11.25 attacks per mile, or a minimum of one attack per day along Route Irish since the November immediately previous to the tragedy.

Like you noted, the naysayers and "blame America first" crowd aren't even THINKING, much less trying to place themselves in the very demanding position of that underpaid and overworked soldier standing on the spot.
