Question

US bought TV working in Poland?

Mar 16, 2017 10:54AM PDT

I am moving back to Poland and I have been reading a lot about bringing your appliances/furniture vs selling them.

I will be shipping my car and some other belongings in a cargo container so the cost of shipping the TV is not my concern - it is one price whether the TV is there or not. My concern is, will it work there.

TV #1: LG 60UF7700 (http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-60UF7700-4k-uhd-led-tv)
- The specs show power supply as: 100~240Vac, 50~60Hz so I assume I can just plug it into the outlet with an adaptor. Please correct me if I am wrong.
- The TV System listed in Owner's Manual says: "ATSC, NTSC-M, 64 & 256 QAM". Is my only hurdle getting a NTSC to PAL converter if I want to watch television?

TV #2: SONY XBR-55X850D (https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=XBR55X850D&LOC=3#/manualsTab)
- The specs show power requirement as "19.5 V DC with AC adapter ".... Any ideas on this one?
- As far as the TV System, same this as in #1: "NTSC: American TV standard, ATSC (8VSB terrestrial): ATSC compliant 8VSB, QAM on cable: ANSI/SCTE 07 2000"

I do not have a cable in US. I use the TV to hook up xbox and stream apps like Netflix, HBO Go etc. So I am wondering if I will be able to utilize my TV(s) in Poland the same way?

I see that the LG is discontinued but there is a huge price difference for my Sony TV in US vs Poland. Not only that, the difference would be much higher if I took a hit by selling it.

Thanks so much in advance for any feedback on this. I know there are multiple forums with people asking those questions in general. However, there is no general answer as each TV has different specs.

Clarification Request
Broadcast TV in Polska is DVB-T AFAIK
Mar 17, 2017 7:39AM PDT

There are no converters I know of to go from DVB-T to ATSC or NTSC (which is a requirement for your televisions). They couldn't sell as many TVs globally if one model worked everywhere Wink

OTOH, some of the Polish cable operators may still offer analog (~PAL) service, so in that limited scenario, you could try a PAL->NTSC converter for your TV#2. No guarantee it will work however.

See Bob's reply regarding smart TV features. If you need that stuff, it likely won't work. There are separate offerings of HBO GO offered by Cyfra/Polsat/etc. from what I remember (my wife has family in Polan). XBOX should be fine AFAIK.

Answer
Here's the general answer.

Split this into 2 areas.

1. Power.
Check the power input to see if it's compatible. Most sets take in 100 to 240 AC and 50-60 Hz. Those don't require step up or down transformers.

2. Tuner issues. If the move is from US to Poland then forget the tuner. And use convertors if need be for HDMI.

Frankly? Don't do this.

PS. Smart TVs are regionalized. So nope. that is, may as well jump into a tar pit.
