Ethnicity

Uruguayans share a Spanish linguistic and cultural background with its neighbour country Argentina. Also, like Argentina, most Uruguayans are descended from colonial-era settlers and immigrants from Europe with almost 88% of the population being of European descent. Approximately 6% of the population is Mestizo, while Afro-Uruguayans form 4% and about 1% or 2% are of Asian descent, mostly Lebanese/Syrian Arab and Chinese or Japanese ancestry. Amerindians make up a small population in the rural North-West region.

The cuisine of Uruguay is traditionally based on its European roots, like Mediterranean foods from Italy, Spain and France, but also Germany. Many foods from those countries such as pasta, sausages, and desserts are common in the nation's diet.
