Resolved Question

urgent help required - problem with internal hard disk

Dec 15, 2011 11:23AM PST

I have a desktop computer, win 7 , 1 GB RAM with two internal hard disks one IDE type of 80 GB(WD) capacity and other SATA type of 320 GB(WD) capacity. The sata disk was loaded with the OS. For the past few days it was making noise while getting started, hence it was suggested to replace it with a new one. So I purchased a Samsung SATA drive of 320 capacity. When connected and loaded with the win 7 it was not detecting the IDE drive , even though it is being shown in manage part of my computer properties and also in device manager. but when i o open My computer this drive is not visible. To check back I reconnected my old SATA Hard disk (WD 80GB), but this time here also the other disk is not visible. Again here also the manage and the disk manager shows its presence but not in My Computer. Please help as i have load of important data both personal and official..

P.S. I tried updating the driver from internet but it says that driver is up to date.

HD install

That seems odd to me. if you had any s/w that came with the new HD, usually it provides a complete "image HD swap" from old to new HD. It should have worked as if nothing changed. Of course, you have to pay attention to details as what HD is what. Otherwise, you may mess up the old HD and also any other HD by mistake(s). If you gotten no s/w, then visit the HD support website and get it and re-try the whole process again. You may want to disconnect the old 80gb(IDE) HD in the meantime. Once all done, reconnect and reboot and check results.

FYI- You could have brought a larger HD than 320 and be done with the old 80gb. I suggest only to get it out of the picture. You know a 500gb or 1tb HD for slightly more $ would eliminate legacy problems. Also, what was done in the bios if anything?

I think that's proper. Here's why.

If the BIOS is set to IDE emulation then as we add the other SATA drives the IDE ports vanish. The DISK MANAGER may show the new blank drive but rarely in Explorer until we put a partition on the new drive and format the new drive.
