Explorer is fragile. This goes for Explorer as in your Desktop, and Windows Explorer, (your file manager, as well as Documents, Photos, Music, Video, etc).
The frailty is, that if explorer has to display an icon or a thumbnail of a movie or photo that is corrupted, it may freeze, or fail.
My first check would be to see what photos or movies you have located on the Desktop, and move them off to some other folder, or delete them.
Other than that, malware can cause explorer problems, so be sure to scan with your anti-virus, and then also download, install, update and scan with both Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware

Every time I start up my PC windows explorer (explorer.exe) will not load, i know this sounds like a repeat but no other solutions have worked for me. To get my desktop and background i have to start task manager end the existing explorer.exe and start a new instance of it and then almost instantly it works. laptop info:

Windows vista home premium
