Explorer is fragile. This goes for Explorer as in your Desktop, and Windows Explorer, (your file manager, as well as Documents, Photos, Music, Video, etc).

The frailty is, that if explorer has to display an icon or a thumbnail of a movie or photo that is corrupted, it may freeze, or fail.

My first check would be to see what photos or movies you have located on the Desktop, and move them off to some other folder, or delete them.

Other than that, malware can cause explorer problems, so be sure to scan with your anti-virus, and then also download, install, update and scan with both Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware

See how you get on with those.
