upscaling question

May 30, 2008 8:14AM PDT

I am buying a new LCD TV, Samsung LN40A450, and wanted to get an upscaling DVD player. I currently have a highly rated upscaling unit on order, but I just ran across a Home theater system that comes with a DVD player and I don't know if it is an upscaling unit. It is the "Panasonic SC-PT760" system with a 5 disc DVD player. Panasonic's website says that it "converts standard definition (720 x 480 pixels) images from DVD sources to high definition (1920 x 1080 pixels) images." I feel so "out of the loop" on all this stuff, I just want to know if this will make my old DVDs look good on my new 720p TV. Please help

what's your budget limit?

if your player is highly rated, why bother changing it out anyways?

sit tight, wait a year to two, get a quality Bluray for $200 or so when that time comes. Or just jump on board now. All of the Bluray players upscale, but some a lot better than others. You can get a PS3 for $400 or so, and that upscales as well. Depends on your budget.

The difference between native and upscaled is a big one. However, if your viewing angle is small, it might not matter (outside of colors and lossless audio, that is).

Upscaling unit

From you description of the DVD player in the Panasonic HT system, it does upscale. It's the terminology "converts standard def 720X480 to high def 1920X1080 that gives it away. Typically though, the DVD players that come in a HT system aren't as good as stand-alone units, especially those that are "highly rated". I'm curious too why you are considering another DVD player?

Upscaling unit

I guess I am considering this other unit because it is part of the "Panasonic HT system." I have an older HT system that is about 9 years old. I am assuming that this older system won't work with the new TV. Am I wrong? What things do I need to look for to see if they will work together? Thank you both for your posts and helpful comments.
