General discussion

UPS or voltage regulator

Oct 21, 2006 8:10AM PDT

We are running a desktop and a laptop (AC plug most of the time ) without any power protector.

A few days ago we had some problems with the AC power in our community.

We would appreciate suggestions.

Thanks.

Worth it?, yes

Just how important is your data and equipment? The bottom line is you need protection, even if basic to help maintain "uptime". Thus, using a line conditioner and/or UPS is always a plus and shouldn't be discounted. Google for the makers of APC and Triplett devices and they cover the topic very well. The cost of a surge protector and UPS is pretty low cost, more as you get into optional stuff. As for line conditioner, it's added protection if you feel power glitches are common even if in thought but they seem so, worth the cost. Since, your systems are a laptop and desktop, the initail cost shouldn't be all that great. Beware, don't buy the cheapest protection, expect cheap protection if so.

Laptops have their own UPS.

It's that battery. You can test that by pulling the AC cord from the wall. It keeps running.

But having UPS is a good thing for machines that can't handle power outages.

Here the power is rarely out. But still the lightning storms are a worry so there are many power bars with spike protection.

The lesson is that you can tailor such to your needs.

Unanimous ... and I recommend the UPS, esp for

desktops.

You get both protection from spikes and drops, you also minimize the chance of data corruption in the event of unanticipated power loss. Unfortunately the UPS is one of the most oft overlooked peripherals when people spec out their PC requirements. Some only realize this after disaster...hope that doesn't happen to you.
