Upon start-up, screen opens in sections?

I have a HP dv6500 (but box said 6366? was I duped?) with Vista. I don't think I have installed the first service pack.

when I start the computer, the screen comes on, but from the top down, and there will be a slight delay so the top half shows first, then a second later the rest of the screen loads.

What is the deal? My comp is over a year old. How can I fix this problem?

What if you close your eyes for 2 seconds? Would that help?
