General discussion

upgrading ram

May 14, 2005 10:29PM PDT

Hi All

I have been given a computer running win ME. (My own PC runs XP pro.) and I want to use the pc to learn as much as I can about the OS and upgrading. I find it totally different to XP so any help that you can give would be very much appreciated. Can you set a system restore point Is there a system restore application. This pc is a Tiny computer with 64MB ram and 15KB HDD
The ram module is B6786 SD Ram running @ 66MHZ. Do you think it would be possible to buy a new module to increase the amount of ram memory? With respect and very little knowledge, are you guys running Win ME on computers as old as mine or do you have newer computers but just enjoy Win ME.
This PC ran for 2 years on an NTL broadband connection without a firewall and had no antivirus or spyware utilities on it. I put on Spyboy S & D, Se adaware,& Agv. Ran SE adaware 7 times and the others 2 or 3 times each. Results 89 viruses and 1300 spy/aware & malware.
Its a wonder it was running at all. but clean now.
Is it possible to connect this PC to a broadband connection @1MB without serious reprecussions.

All help and information gratefully accepted. Thanks
Maggs

Not Dimms ram
May 15, 2005 8:37AM PDT

No Ray. I am pretty sure it was labled with the part number and actually said SD ram.

As soon as I get the Pc connected & Running on BB(LOL)
I will be able to supply you with the details.

Will this little machine cope with 1MB BB connection?

If we can't get it running on BB I can always count the pins, take a picture or something.

Cheers maggs

Thanks for all you efforts

Just a thought. I am using my Hp computer on Win Xp
to communicate in these discussions.

DIMM's are RAM
May 15, 2005 8:46AM PDT

SODIMM's are smaller to fit in laptops.

The memory chips are the same in both, the circuit card that they are on is thinner in the SODIMM.

DIMM is simply the name of the chip package that the memory is in. DUAL INLINE MEMORY MODULE. There are a number of them on a memory stick, both 168 pin and the SODIMM's. The DIMM type package is used for SDRAM, DDRSDRAM, and DDR2SDRAM. The differenc is the number of pins on the circuit card that the DIMMs are mounted on.

The oldies were SIMM's [single Inline] and they were either Fast Page Mode [RAM or memory]or EDO [RAM or memory].

Kinda like, to get into the BIOS you elect to get into setup. LOL

A little more. Broadband and

dialup are all serial processes, the CPU runs 32 bit parallel. Thus the broadband speed is normally a piece of cake for the CPU. Maybe the graphics will be slowed by an old video card.

Looks as if mushkin may

be a little lower price on PC 133, although I didn't check shipping.

http://www.mushkin.com

Another quality vendor with full warranty/return.

If choosing between CL2 and CL 3 [each the same price at crucial] choose CL2 even though that probably won't help in theis system, but in case you put it into a system that supports PC 133 later.

"Some success" response
May 17, 2005 7:57AM PDT

>>>>Hi Toni
as you know, before I went to bed last night, windows would not shut down. Left it on. tried again when I got home from work this evening and it shut down perfectly OK.

I then went into safe mode Start/programmes/run/ scanreg /restore. This brought up the restore facility showing the "restore" dates. It quoted May 13th, 14th,15th, 16th, 17th so despite not being able to clear the check box in system restore it would appear that the restore facility is still backing up the system. Would you agree?
As a precausion however I am going into system restore and clearing the tick from the box every time I switch on. hopefully you may be able to provide a solution.

Thanks for all you help maggs>>>>

There is no need to uncheck it anymore since you know it is now working properly, Maggs....we only wanted to test the program to make sure it was.

What I suggest now, is that you get your internet set up and get to the Windows Update Center to update the ME system and internet files......and then get your spyware and antivirus program updated as well.

Once you get that taken care of, you can run the spyware program...and do an on-line free scan at Trend to make sure everything is clean. If nothing gets reported with the online scan, then you're good to go because if anything is found in the system restore files, it will tell you right away....and we can deal with that after you let us know how things went.

Maggs, About A Broadband Connection...Ray Sent Me...
May 17, 2005 9:46AM PDT

I agree with your assessment about AOL for broadband...I don't think it's necessary for a good connection or for a good internet experience...but each to his/her own. I'm not familiar with the ISP's in your area but you should be able find one that simply gives you the connection, the modem, and the software to install the connection.

I don't see where you have mentioned it, but you will definitely need an ethernet card for the Windows ME computer. If you're going to use two computers in the same house, you might even consider going wireless but you would need a wireless router connected to the modem you might have already and then a wireless adapter for the Windows ME computer. If you're going wireless, you won't need the ethernet card.

Please give us a little more information about EXACTLY how you want the computers to be set up in your home and we should be able to help.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

To Help With The Connection And Resources...
May 17, 2005 9:51AM PDT

I see that you mentioned there were earlier internet accounts used on the machine. At this point, I would leave them alone..I don't think they'll get in the way of a good connection later.

I also saw that you were running at fairly low resources on start up...Please follow the steps in the links below to help raise that up a little. The steps below may take a while, but it should help with your shutdown issues as well as others potential problems:

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

Hope this helps, too.

BB Issue
May 18, 2005 4:08AM PDT

Hi Grif,
Guests comming tonight so can't do much but will certainly follow your advice tomorrow.
A very quick explanation of the way BB is set up in the UK.

The telephone line is split and a filter is used to seperate the phone line form the BB line.
When you get BB you usually have to sign onto an ISP.
This effectively stops you from using the BB/Net except by the ISP you are signed up to. In other words my BB connection is restricted to AOL and I cannot access any other provider unless I terminate my contract with AOl and they release my telephone line.
In effect my telephone line is theirs as far as BB is concerned and no other BB provider can access it, Although British Telecom own the telephone lines. They have rented my line to AOL for BB purposes and cannot and will not let any other service access it.
Sorry, Must go now butl will explain how I want to use this little PC tomorrow.

many Many Thanks cheers maggs
