Question

Upgrading my Dell 620 Latitude, What should I do?

May 12, 2015 1:23PM PDT

I've got an old Dell D620 Latitude Laptop

Specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz
Memory: 1.00 GB
OS: Windows Vista Business, 32-bit Operating System

I was looking at upgrading my memory from 1GB to 4GB and possibly upgrading my SSD.

This is my last bit of hardware that is still working, so I'm trying to stretch this one out as long as possible. I would like to be able to browse the internet smoothly, and if possible but not needed play League of Legends (System Requirements: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri?gameName=league-of-legends&itemId=10933&p=r)

All while trying to ball out on a budget, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Snorlax

Answer
Start with the RAM.

1GB would be gruesome slow on Vista.

Surprisingly

It's not that bad, but in comparison to computers nowadays its a little slow especially when trying to do more than one thing at once. Ad are a nightmare

Ad?

Let me share my recipe.

Firefox with Adblock+ and WOT (web of trust.)

I don't see many ads.

I do have add blocker but it crashes a lot. I think that would be fixed with Ram. The real question is what would be an appropriate amount of ram 2,3,4?

Have to disagree.

I've had 1GB Vista machines and adding ram did not stop crashes. I had to hunt down what it was. There are dozens of causes but today the reining causes are heat (heatsink is dirty, compound is dry and cracked) and malware.

No one seems to use canned air until they have problems so there's that. Here's Grif on malware.

For Windows Vista, 2 GB would certainly make it faster, although it's doubtful if it becomes more reliable.
I wouldn't spend more on such an old laptop.

Now that we know it's unreliable...

My answers change to trying cleaning and an OS reload. You also have the 32 BIT VISTA so going over 2GB of RAM may not have any effect. There are thousands of posts complaining about that so I'll just stop on that with:

Looking at 4GB RAM laptops for 200 to 250 at http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Computers-Accessories-Laptop/zgbs/pc/565108 sees a few in the top 10. It would be too easy to blow 250 bucks on this old and cranky laptop.
