Question

Upgrading Inspiron 1525 to 8gb RAM

I've upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1525 to Win 7 Pro and would like to expand the memory from the specified 4 gb max to 8 gb. Has anyone done this and will it work?

6GB may work, 8GB reportedly fails

Both Dell and Intel say the max is supposed to be 4gb using the Intel 965 chipset in the 1525, but two reports on the Dell forum have claimed that 6gb works, while 8gb fails. This was using a 2gb and 4gb module. This is rumor, posted here:

There is no formal verification and this may be exploiting an undocumented capability of the Intel 965 chipset or some quirk of the Dell implementation on the 1525, so it is technically risky, but fun to try. The 4GB modules are expensive, so this may not make financial sense on this old laptop, but for those who just have to try new options, it's tempting.
