Upgraded Windows Me to XP on Saturday...can't get online

Jun 7, 2005 7:04AM PDT

I have msn dial up (I know, I know...I want to switch to cable but I need to get over the price first). Tried to get online after I brought my computer home. Modem works. Gets a dial tone, dials and then says it's connected. MSN tries to sign me in 5 times then says it can't, might be a problem with my internet connection or their system. I can get to my home email from work. This has been happening for 4 days now.
After I type my sign in info for msn and hit ok, I get a message that I need to change windows telephony to USA (?), I click ok and it opens a window that has my modem name and it has my location information. It does have USA on it. Not sure where else I"m supposed to look?
I"m sorry if this is a really stupid question, I'm not very computer savvy Sad
I appreciate any help...thanks!

Little quirky things like modems....

not connecting in XP but working in ME, leads me to ask if you updated the drivers for the various hardware devices to XP compatibility. This is an important step.

Hopefully You're Not Using SP2
Jun 7, 2005 11:03AM PDT

Even if you are using SP2, modems can still be tricky under XP. Regardless, obtain the latest and greatest XP driver for your modem, *then* go into the Device Manager, update the modem driver, and reboot. One hopes that'll do it.

If you're using SP1, all should be well. If you're using SP2, then you may up the proverbial creek. I know from (recent) experience that not all devices port to SP2, even w/ up-to-date XP drivers. I hope this isn't true in your case. I recently upgraded a ME PC to XP SP2 and suddenly the (working) on-board Ethernet *and* audio stopped working, even w/ XP-ready drivers. In my case, I was fortunate that I had a XP SP1 CD, so after a reinstall, all was well again. I know of a colleague who does tech support also and he's reported similar problems. However, this is NOT true for EVERY SP2 install ! However it's happened often enuf that one mentions it. Good luck....Jet
