Upgraded to Vista Ultimate, now NO sound

Oct 5, 2007 6:59PM PDT

I have a Gateway Laptop, M675XL. I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate and now there is not sound. If I go to the speakers properties and then go under the drivers tab, I see that I have SigmaTel C-Major audio. The driver version is 6.14.14175. If I click Driver Details I see four driver files:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\dmk.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\portcls.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\STAC97.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\stac97co.dll

If I try to "update driver" windows will do a search online, and then tell me that the drivers are up to date.

Neither my computer speakers, nor my external speakers are working at all, and every menu I can find that has to do with sound, shows that everything is unmuted and at full volume and enabled.

Can anyone help me figure out why I have no sound and lead me to a solution? Please write me back and let me know exactly what you will need to help me troubleshoot. thank you in advance!!

You need Vista drivers

from the sound card. If there isn't one, you will not have sound using that operating system.

Not supported, but...

The 4-year-old laptop doesn't support Vista, but you can try this download of SigmaTel audio drivers for a similar model. If it doesn't work you're likely out of luck, though.

Installer will not continue
Oct 6, 2007 4:28AM PDT

I downloaded the audio driver but unless there is a workaround to installing it through the gateway given instructions, I cannot get the drivers to instal. windows gives the error "these are not the correct drivers for this system, setup will not continue". is there any way to get those drivers to install or is there anywhere else where compatible drivers may be found?

Got to the software providers web site on the net

some times these do not download automatically and must be manually installed. Find out what your motherboard is and see if there are driver updates for it from there web site. Check here to see if there is a chip set installed on the MB for sound. Did you check in control panel>sound for additional properties and trouble shooting information?
