Upgrade to Home Premium or Professional?

I got an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner a few years ago and it worked great with XP and still does. No drivers for Vista though. The software appeared to install correctly in Vista, but it doesn't work the way it does in XP.
MS's vague reference to ''XP mode' in Win 7 Professional makes me wonder if that option will get this scanner running again on this machine. If my understanding of this is correct, it seems very low life to make us pay for the ability to run things that ran on XP.

Unlikely, since I'm pretty sure the XP Mode doesn't apply to drivers, and you'd need those for the software to be able to communicate with the hardware.
