Follow these instructions for performing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7. Essentially you are running a custom installation so your files won't be saved to Windows.old, you will need to perform a backup. The step-by-step tutorial will cover how to backup using Windows Easy Transfer and walk you through restoration after installation has completed.

I am planning on upgrading to Windows 7 in the near future, and I wanted to use an upgrade disc from Windows XP. I know that that will work with the Windows.old. My problem is that I have heard things about reformatting the drive and product keys not working. I was planning on using Windows Easy Transfer and using that to put everything on DVDs and start new with a clean HD.
Does anybody know about this?
BTW, my hard drive is too small to support windows.old and 7, so that won't work
Thanks
