Upgrade Processor on Sony Vaio Picturebook?

Jan 10, 2005 11:59AM PST

I want to upgrade the processor on my Vaio notebook. It's PCG-C1MW with a Crusoe 867mhz. Can I upgrade to a 2Ghz or so? If so, do I need to buy another Crusoe chip? Or is it the same form factor as Intel? Help!

Transmeta in transition (makes Crusoe chips)

Your options are not great if you have a Crusoe as I just read last week the company (Transmeta) is restructuring and trying to get into just chip design rather than manufacturing as they have not been profitable.

AMD had to fight Intel for years to get profitable and had many setbacks but now AMD is making inroads with its AMD 64, etc.

You can try to see what Transmeta Crusoe upgrades are available but I doubt there is much out there given the status of the company itself.

This is another example of buying companies on the fringe like Daewoo (gone from US but now back as GM owned cars from Suzuki and GM), Daihatsu (gone form US but cars were decent and still sold in Japan), Renault (horrible French cars sold under AMC and withdrew but now own Nissan and may be back as the Megane scenic is the hot segment in Europe), etc.

Notebook chip upgrading a nightmare

Another factor is that upgrading the chip in any notebook is a nightmare. If you can find the part, it's super expensive, and then you have to put it in, which is a job and a half.

Crusoe undoubtedly used some form factor that intel used but surely used a different chipset. Even if by some chance it used an Intel-based motherboard, the speed of the processor tells me that it's old enough that it's on par with a P3-M which probably can't be bought anymore.
