Question

Upgrade HDDs in a RAID 1 array.

Jul 27, 2015 9:34AM PDT

Hi,
I currently have a Fujitsu Primergy TX100 S3 with 2 500GB HDDs in a RAID 1 Array, I have cloned both HDDs onto 2 new HGST 4TB HDDs but how do I make them work with the RAID so they are bootable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lee.

Answer
Never found that to work.

I'm guessing you tried that and it failed. The more common way is to install your new drives, set them up in the RAID as you like then restore from your backup.

These appear to be servers so back to Fujitisu at http://www.fujitsu.com/fts/products/computing/servers/primergy/tower/ and see if they documented such a change or upgrade. It may be specific to your model but the most common path I know is to put in the drives and restore from backup.

PS. Ask Fujitsu about 4TB Drive support.
Jul 27, 2015 9:52AM PDT

4TB drives are very new. Many servers, PCs, USB cases, and "things" don't have 4TB or larger drive support. Only the maker may know this detail. I only know to ask them.

Not exactly what I'm trying to do.

I am doing this in a commercial environment but never undertaken such a thing hence the support. I need to do this quickly and efficiently. It needs to be an exact image so no re-configuration is needed once booted. The only way I found if take one out then rebuild from the 'good' hdd then repeat from the other and then expand the drive to the full 4tb is this a viable way?

Have to write no.

I've yet to find any other way other than the setup and restore from backup. The 4TB drive may not be supported on the RAID controller. I've lost count of how many don't support past a few TB.

Let's say you want efficient. Call Fujitsu now and get the support you need. I can only tell you how I've done this to date and point out a real problem area that could mean you won't be doing this at all.

As to your rebuild, why not? If that works, you found an exit.

I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they say especially when it comes to the 4TB support. I will write back so you get the answer too.
