This is a subject that has no exact answer.
Because no one agrees on the answer.
Here is just a snapshot of what you are asking:
Canon has a kit lens for the Rebel:
Canon - 18-55 f3.5 and sells for about $100
That is what Canon says is the all around lens.
.......
Here are other lenses that others select:
Canon 17-85 f4.0 with Image Stabilization - $590
Sigma 18-125 f3.5 - $220
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - $320
Canon 28-200 f3.5 - S360
Tamron 28-200 f3.8 - $230
Sigma 28-200 f3.5 - $200
You have to decide if you want to favor the wide-angle end of the spectrum or the zoom end of the spectrum. Or something in between.
Do you want a bright lens (one that is best for low light situations).
The Tamron 28-75 has the brightest lens (f2.
of the ones above.
Then there is price/quality
..............
Most people go with the kit lens and after they use the camera for a month or so, they will know what type of lens they want.

I am currently in the market to upgrade my digital camera. I currently own a Canon G2, but would like to purcahse a DSLR. I have been looking at both the digital Rebels (the 300 and the 350D). I am only using the camera for shots around the house, Kids, their sports, and vacation (nothing fancy or professional). When I print I rarely print anything over 5x7. Also I would need to purcahse a good all around lens for the camera. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Al
