Mark,
Personally, I'm still using Office 2000 at home. It seems to be fully compatible with with any document/presentation/spreadsheet sent to me by anybody, and I can do with it what I need, so I see no need to upgrade even to 2003 (which I have on CD), let alone 2007, while I use XP at work. Things might be different if things change at work, but I don't expect Windows Vista (and that presumably will be the trigger to switch Office also) this year.
The only drawback: I can't develop Access forms on a copy of a XP database I have at work. But in a certain sense it's an advantage to do your work things at work and your private things at home, so I really don't mind.
Some mods here use free Openoffice at work and at home. Why pay MS (or anybody) when the free software does all you need?
Maybe tell more on your requirements?
Kees
