A 4870 should be fine irregardless of driver as I was able to get full 1080p output from a paltry old Lenovo with core2duo and integrated video. Yours is a light year ahead so I doubt it's a driver issue at all.

Hey all. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB on an Early 2008 Mac Pro running 10.7.5. I ran into issues playing Walking Dead Season two and it looks like I need to update the drivers for the Radeon. However it doesn't seem like I can do that without either upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks. I don't really want to do that because I don't want to either slow down my mac or affect the performance of my Adobe CS6 suite. Is there a way to upgrade the drivers without changing system?
BTW the game runs fine in Bootcamp with Win 7. On that side I'm using the Catalyst drivers.
