Updating to Lifetime from AVG 2011 Free and serious problems

Jan 21, 2011 3:19AM PST

AVG web site asked for my credit card number and all - put it in and hit submit and it timed out....

Windows now tells me that it is infected...
all firefox and ie browsers show something from AVG that says basically this website is a threat - even AVG's website...

Cannot uninstall, cannot purchase, NO contact information to call them... support non responsive - I basically had to shut my laptop down and get on another....

I am SICK !!!! Any ideas how to get my laptop going and protect my bank account ?

Where did you get this from?

Seems like a scam to me but perhaps one of the AVG Mods here will say more.

What was the web site you purchased this lifetime license from? All the links I can see in Google suggest a hack or similar.

As to your credit card, phone the card provider immediately and tell them.

Hello JohnBoyToo,

please be informed that AVG never offer lifetime license - you can buy AVG license for 1 or 2 years. This looks more like fake rogue anti-virus. Please check your computer with AVG RescueCD (burn, load after computer start-up, update and run AVG scan). What is the current situation? What is the exact name of offered (suggested) anti-virus?

If the situation still persists, please provide us (upload to online storage and post link) with Gmer and Autoruns outputs in an archive (zip file) for closer analysis.

Thank you

the Nero 6 that came with my Targa external cdrw/dvd rom drive is too old to do what is asked...
so I downloaded nero burnlite 10 and got the files to the cd...
verified they were there and yet didn't know how to start it on the infected laptop.

wow - what a battle.....

too bad my active and up to date virus protection didn't stop this...

Hello JohnBoyToo,

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused.
Unfortunately no security software can provide with 100% detection rate so it is sometimes possible to get infected even when you are fully updated. Our virus specialists are working 24/7 to keep the databases as up to date as possible.

Could you please describe the difficulties with booting from AVG rescue CD?
Are there any unclear steps in the guide?

Was the CD burned using "Burn image file" option?
Can you change the boot option to CD in your BIOS?

Thank you

That seems wrong. It's plural. It should be singular, because it's one iso-file.
If you happened to do it right (you didn't really tell the details), just boot from the cd you made.
