question about JRE 6u14
by michhala / May 29, 2009 5:30 PM PDT

Is this release specifically for Windows 7, Internet Explorer 8, Windows Server 2008 SP2, and Windows Vista SP2? I ask because my Java tells me I am up-to-date with 6u13(1.6.0.13_b03).

by Carol~ Moderator / May 29, 2009 11:25 PM PDT

I'm sure she will confirm (or deny) this:

If you checked to see if you are "up-to-date" via Java's Control Panel, it's been my experience it takes some time before it reflects the new update. Sometimes days. At times.. weeks. As of earlier this morning (I found) Java.com still offered Version 6 Update 13. I updated to 14 from the link below.

Sun notes "This release is Windows 7 support-ready and includes support for Internet Explorer 8, Windows Server 2008 SP2, and Windows Vista SP2". It doesn't disclude Windows XP. It only means it's "support-ready" for the latest IE browser, Service Pack for Vista, etc.

I downloaded Java SE Runtime Environment 6 (JRE) Update 14 from here:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

As an added note: If you decide to install it, don't forget to go to Java's CP>Advanced Tab>Miscellaneous, afterwards and untick "Java Quick Starter". (If I remember correctly, you disabled it in the past)

Hope this helps..

Thanks, Carol -- I seem to come up with a question quite often with new Java updates. I am too specific and detailed a person.

As you, I, too, have found that the new updates do not show on the Java control panel right away.

I am a reasonably intelligent person (for a blonde) and feel if I am confused, other "blondes" might be, too. Although the Sun notes do not declude Windows XP, it wouldn't hurt for them to provide more complete info...methinks. That said, rather than have brain drain, I take the easy way out and check with y'all.

You remember correctly about the "Java Quick Starter" Happy

You're most welcome, Miki. & JavaRa New Version 1.14

Hi Miki..

You wrote, "I am too specific and detailed a person". Well thanks "for sharing". Who wudda thunk such a thing?? Devil

Here's something to ponder. I know you like to keep things "neat and tidy". I suspect you also don't like to install all the "latest and greatest" software "out there". I use a small utility called, "JavaRa". How much smaller could it be than this?

'JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Simply select "Check for Updates" or "Remove Older Version" to begin...' It's further explained within the above hyperlink.

As you know, the older Java version is "supposed" to be removed with the new installation. One would hope all files are removed. With that said, JavaRa always finds leftover files. (In my case, even after having run CCleaner)

Re "neat and tidy" -- you got that right! I knew you would understand!

You wrote: I suspect you also don't like to install all the "latest and greatest" software "out there". I use a small utility called, "JavaRa".

I have been using a computer for 11 years. For the first 7 years, I was enchanted by the technical aspects of the computer and had to have the "latest and greatest" versions of everything. In the early years, I enjoyed the satisfaction of a successful install and the challenges involved in problem-solving. In the later years, I became content to exist peacefully with my PC and to be a devoted follower of the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix".

It was thoughtful of you to take the time to let me know about JavaRa, and I apprciate the thought. Having said that, I do not have a problem uninstalling previous Java and installing new. I do not run CCleaner, but after an uninstall, I don't mind doing a Search for leftover files and also removing the relevant Registry entries.

I send my thanks for your help.... your posts are an education and informative -- I did not know about JavaRa and now I do Happy

I will be getting a new computer when Windows 7 and its SP1 are released.....at that time, I suspect my peaceful existence with the computer will be challenged until it is customized to "neat and tidy" Happy

Miki... Carol is very correct :)
by Donna Buenaventura / May 30, 2009 12:53 AM PDT

Also, Java recommend to use the latest version to take advantage of the improvements/fix.

They don't serve the update soon to people all the time as what Carol posted earlier and it depends on the "fixes". If it's security fixes impacting many system then I'm sure Sun will push it soon.

The JRE 6u14 is not only for Windows 7, IE8, Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 users but to all people who want to take advantage of the bug fixes which is a lot, if you will look at the release notes:
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/6u14.html

@Carol, thanks a lot! Happy

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
