Spybot 1.6 released July 8, 2008

In reply to: UPDATES - July 8, 2008

[quote]

Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! July 8, 2008

Time for an update! To keep up with the latest threats, and solve some issues and feature requests users had, we're proud to announce Spybot-S&D version 1.6. Some of the features include:
Improved Scan Speed

Reported a few weeks ago as one of the big issues users face, Spybot-S&D 1.6 integrates parts of the future 2.0 file scanning engine to speed up the on-demand scan.
Up-to-date browser support

Both immunization and the on-demand scan are able to access a dozen different browsers, which now includes the latest revisions of the most popular ones, Firefox and Opera.
Easier On-Access Use

Until now, our on-access part was able to block bad entries, but at the same time, confused many novice users by asking for confirmation on changes of other monitored system entries as well. While this is a great feature for all experienced users who want full control over their systems, we decided that we need to make this easier for the average user, and integrated automated decisions based on the system entry database built through our RunAlyzer, containing more than quarter of a million decisions.
OpenSBI

Safer Networking also announces OpenSBI, our attempt at opening up the fight against malware to anyone who wants to participate. OpenSBI means we've published documenation and tools that anyone can use to create their own malware detection patterns for use with Spybot-S&D, and share those with other Spybot-S&D users.

* Diversity - everyone can create detection templates for any software, without depending on a central authority to acknowledge its threat.
* Neutrality - we cannot be bought to remove detections from our database, but if you do not believe us, you can simply publish your own rules against some malware.
* Continuity - OpenSBI ensures that you'll get updates as long as someone is interested in updating the database (which does not mean we intend to do less work in adding new detections).
* Flexibility - as a system administrator using the network edition, you can make sure that working time is not wasted by employees playing the latest Moorhuhn clone if you add your own detection for it. Keep in mind that some relaxation is said to even improve work results.

And quite a lot more bug fixes and new features, which can be found on bug tracker.

Do I have to uninstall the old version before installing 1.6

In reply to: Spybot 1.6 released July 8, 2008

I couldn't get Spybot S&D 1.6 via the application's built in updater. So I'm assuming this is a new version. What is the most reliable method of uninstalling the old version, using the application's uninstaller or Add or Remove Programs?

Harv, I have been having

In reply to: Do I have to uninstall the old version before installing 1.6

weather issues where I live and have had to shut down numerous times the last few hours. Because of that I have not had time to check out the Spybot forum for the exact directions for this,. I will do that but it may not be for a few hours. I am so far behind in all my forums that it is going to take me a day to catch up. We have more storms coming also.

Sorry, I hope you don't mind waiting. Maybe Carol or someone else has time the check the Spybot forum, otherwise I will do it later weather permitting.

Harv, not sure which is best but...

In reply to: Harv, I have been having

my method was to uninstall the old version through add/remove. Then deleted all remnants of the program file.

New version installed perfectly and having no problems of any type. In the install process it asks if you want to get the latest updates or words to that effect... I did that.

I am running Vista if that makes any difference. I remember problems in the past with new versions of Spybot but none of that this time. Maybe Roddy will weather the storms without incident. We wish for a little rain here without the storms.

Hope this helps!

Harv.. In addition to Glenn's input....

In reply to: Do I have to uninstall the old version before installing 1.6

According to an older link at the Spybot forum (for a previous version), I had "tucked away":

(Scroll down to "Expected Questions & Answers")

'Do I need to uninstall version 1.4 before installing 1.5?

Uninstalling old versions is not strictly necessary, since the update will replace all important files. Only if you do not like to end up with two entries in the Uninstall list, you should uninstall any older version.
'

Another way of doing it, which I'm sorry to say I don't have the link to, but generally the way I do it:

Before installing Spybot S&D 1.5..

1. Undo immunization - Open Spybot>Immunize and click on "undo" at the top of the page.
2. If you are using TeaTimer, deactivate it first. You can also disable the SDHelper if you have it, but it's not imperative. Open IE>Tools>Manage Add-ons and put a tick mark on the bottom of the window where it says "disable".
3. If Opera Browser is installed, de-select protection for Opera Immunity
4. Uninstall old version of Spybot S&D though Add/Remove. If you have any kind of "clean up" programs, it wouldn't hurt to use it, afterwards.
5. Reboot

Have fun deciding, if you haven't installed it already!

Ad-Aware 2007 Updates postponed

by Pekka on July 7th, 2008 in Definition File Updates.

Updates postponed - Definitions file (0100.0000) release will not be available for Ad-Aware 2007

Definitions File updates 0100.0000 on Tuesday July 8 will not be available for Ad-Aware 2007. Normal definition file updates will continue with 0101.0000 Definitions file release on Thursday July 10. Lavasoft has made this decision due to the increased download traffic created by the latest software release of Ad-Aware 2007. It is a major update including the entire Ad-Aware 2008 installation package.

Note: This does not relate to Ad-Aware 2008 users. Ad-Aware 2008 will update normally.

Note: All Ad-Aware versions may experience slow Definitions file and software updates during the upcoming week for the reasons above. We ask you to please be patient.
