Norton WMI Update Master Patch

In reply to: UPDATES - Aug. 12

Norton WMI Update Master Patch is also available - it's 1300.9KB

The Norton Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Update adds compatibility to the Windows Security Center so that it may accurately report the status of your Symantec security software. This patch will install on Windows XP, but will not take effect unless you have the Windows Security Center installed. The Windows Security Center is a specific component of Windows XP Service Pack 2. To fully obtain the Norton WMI Update, you must run LiveUpdate twice.

Re: Norton WMI ...one-time prompt.

In reply to: Norton WMI Update Master Patch

Norton, of course, wants you to answer the WMI prompts, 'checked' by default, to prevent Windows Security Center from monitoring Norton (although ZoneAlarm has no problem doing so, apparently). Then, if prevented, Windows Security Center will put up a constant reminder that Norton's status is 'unknown', unless... you choose to check the Security Center option to disable monitoring it.

Beware... WMI's prompt seems to be a one-time download dialog. If you choose to accept defaults and prevent Windows Security Center from monitoring Norton, and then later decide you want to enable it... you will have to UNinstall ALL Norton products which are tied to the WMI update, to get WMI UNinstalled, and then re-install everything and run updates to get the WMI back... supposedly ...to answer the prompt again.

Haven't verified that procedure works, but I do have a computer which insists Norton SystemWorks' AV is up-to-date, but I never saw the WMI, and constant Live Updating won't produce the WMI download... seems there's no way to separately download the WMI, and no way to 'force' the dialog prompt.

Typical in-fighting between entrenched mindsets and lack of courtesy (by Norton at least) to provide flexible -repeatable- options to the customer.
