Updated yosemite: computer does not get airportexpress IP

Mar 3, 2015 11:00PM PST

Hi there,

i just got myself around updating my imac to yosemite and now my computer does not obtain an ip address from my airport express. it sees the airport express but does not get an ip. when i go to the assistant it asks me to turn off the airport express and restart it. then the computer can get the ip address and works again. however, if i put the desktop to sleep, upon waking it up the same problem appears: it cannot get the ip from the airport express.

I have 2 other computers (macbooks) running yosemite and an ipad, i also have an android phone and these devices have no problem with the aiport express. so the problem is something that got modified/didn't get modified in this particular desktop during the upgrade to yosemite.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you very much in advance.

One thing I found that some skipped

Was a reboot after those changes, deletes after forgetting all networks. If this continues to fail, you have to get back to Apple support.

hi,

i did what you suggested and it didn't work. then i decided to do it all again and, in addition, i created a New Wi-Fi Network Location with Custom DNS as explained in http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/ right after. i had done this last step before as a separate thing (i.e. not immediately after the previous) and it had not work. i don't know what exactly decided to work, this time, but my computer so far goes to sleep and wakes up WITH CONNECTION!!!!!!

now i panic the next update will mess up my connection again...

thank you very much for all your help!

Good move. (DNS)

I don't call using the Google DNS custom. It's a choice we have had for years. It points to an ISP issue rather than a Yosemite one.

I use Namebench ( https://code.google.com/p/namebench/ ) to see which DNS is fastest and I use that. Some call that custom. I didn't.
