Did you check on hp or for any XP SP3 or other patches before SP3? Are you certain it was free from all pests? And how did you check for that?

Yes, that seems to be the one

that we have seen before.

The thing is, you are in a better position than others who updated to SP3 then got stuck. You have managed to recover the system to before SP3 was installed. As that is the case the recovery procedures stated in the Compaq/HP article don't apply to you.

Compaq say near the top of the article that HP has provided a patch, but they don't explain too much, except they give a link to a file sp37394.exe. Although they say you have to follow the procedures listed below first, that doesn't apply in your case. All you have to do is apply that patch, (click on the link that says, sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors), then continue on to installing the SP3 update again.

Good luck.
