Question

updated to windows 8 and HDMI port doesn't work now

Aug 19, 2013 5:26AM PDT

ok so just some specs first
i have a HP Pavilion dv6t-3000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
i upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 64 bit
i have an ATI mobility radeon HD 5000 series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20) and an intel(R) HD graphics card.
next to the ATI mobility in device managers, there is an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. when i open it up, it says
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.
i have tried updating it but it says it is up to date. i have tried going to the HP support page but it only gives me options for a windows 7 computer and says there is nothing for my computer for windows 8. i chatted online with windows support and they could not help me and now I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIX IT. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, i have been trying to figure this out for months and have gotten no where. please someone help me

Microsoft support can't tell you what driver to download and install for this HP notebook to fully support Windows 8. Only HP tech support can tell. If they say it can't be done, it's back to Windows 7, I'm afraid, as a very good fix.

Of course you ran the Windows 8 upgrade advisor before doing this upgrade. What did it say about compatibility?

The windows 8 upgrade advisor did not give me any indication that my laptop was not compatible

I'd go back to Windows 7

I know of a lot of reasons I wouldn't have gone from 7 to 8, but can't think of any good reason to've done that. I'd go back to Windows 7 as fast as I possibly could. If you can't do that with what you have, you can get HP to send you the discs to restore to factory settings for a small fee.

Downgrading
Aug 19, 2013 8:12AM PDT

I would be perfectly fine with going back to windows 7, but when I went to 8, I did so by using the option where all my files and stuff were not affected. If I do go back to windows 7, can I downgrade the same way where my computer isn't wiped?

From what I've seen from Microsoft, same story as before.

No maker today seems to offer such a system. You bring up a good point in that Microsoft 30 years later has yet to consider the user's files something to be treated with care?

Yes, it's been that long.

I'd make a complete system backup

If you make a complete system backup using a good 3rd party backup/restore program, you'll have every bit and byte of data saved on an external hard drive. That way you won't lose anything. I use Easeus Todo Backup Free which you can download from http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm but there're numerous other popular products as well.
CNET has a lot of backup program reviews at
http://download.cnet.com/windows/backup-software/?tag=contentBody;sideBar .

Some of these are free (last time I checked there were over 300), some have free trials (over 1000), and some are purchase only (over 200).
