Question

UPDATED PROBLEM

Jan 3, 2015 2:16PM PST

Hi,
I am having a little problem but it is very annoying since has been already installed.
I keep getting the same notification from Microsoft to install an update, the update in question is
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332)
Download size: 55.8 MB
Update type: Important
This service pack upgrades all Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition instances and components to Service Pack 4 (SP4). If you need additional installation options, you should download this service pack at the Microsoft Download Center. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2463332.
Anything I can do to stop this?
Thank you
G/L

Clarification Request
Does MS SQL show up in programs and features?
Jan 4, 2015 2:19AM PST

Check your control panel to see if the program is installed. Things do sneak up on us and some other software installation may have added the express edition. If you find the program listed in programs and features, you should be able to uninstall it there and the update messages shouldn't happen again. If for any odd reason some other program on your PC is using it, that program will fail if launched later.

SQL SERVER UPDATE
Jan 5, 2015 12:04PM PST

Thanks for your answers

I checked and I have the program: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 installed 9 Nov 2011
When I right click on it I can delete it or change it. I clicked on change and I get the following option:

SQL server 2005 instances: (2 option to chose)

1) MSSMLBIZ: Database Engine
2) SQLEXPRESS: database Engine

SQL Server 2005 Common Components: (1 option)
1) Workstation Component
By looking at the options available it looks like if I do not have the SQLEPRESS installed since the option still available and the update is for express edition:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332)

When I look up the history and this update shows up installed successfully 12 times but keep asking me to install it.

Do I need to install the express version of SQL??

Since I am not running a database I assume that I don't need it, in this case can I delete it??

Thanks

Your choice
Jan 5, 2015 5:51PM PST

Here's where I'd make an image of my drive first and mark it's reason before doing the uninstall. I would still be curious to know if some other program didn't install this unbeknownst to you but I could be all wrong. If so, that program would likely complain if you found and tried to run it. If it's bothering you, go right ahead and remove it and see if the update goes away.

SQL SERVER UPDATE
Jan 7, 2015 9:29AM PST

Thanks again

Do you know if there is a way to see if any program/s actually using the SQL Server?

As you said I can uninstall it but if I encounter any problems can I install it again? I think it is not a free download so it must be purchase from Microsoft.

Thank you

Why do you worry like this?
Jan 7, 2015 9:37AM PST

1. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21844
"no cost, and you are free to redistribute it with applications."

2. If you are worried why not perform your usual full system backup first?
It's not as if you don't. HDDs crash, malware wipes us out at times so your question begs the question why you worry.

SQL SERVER
Jan 7, 2015 10:00AM PST

Thank you, good idea full system backup first

I just came across this bit of info:

SQL SERVER developed by Microsoft as a database, it is a software product whose primary function is to store and retrieve data as requested by other software applications, be it those on the same computer or those running on another computer across a network (including the Internet).

Tricky situation....forget about it or uninstall it

Answer
you run a desktop windows, yes?
Jan 3, 2015 9:58PM PST

If you aren't running a server edition of software, you certainly don't need that. In older windows you could check to have an update to not be offered again. Doesn't windows 8 allow that also?
