Question

Update wants 8 gig, I don't have 8 gig to spare!

by RVHAT / February 10, 2018 10:30 AM PST

I bought a very cheap Windows laptop that has a 32 gig SSD drive and a 64 gig SD card. I thought I was going to be fine because I am a consultant and only use that machine to give presentations, etc. Then Windows started bloating up and even with the swap file on the SD card I barely have 3 gig left. Now Windows wants to do an update and it wants 8 gig of free drive space. I don't have, and cannot give it 8 gig of free space.

Can I stop this update notice from taking over my machine several times a day? Or, alternatively, can I put the 8 gig Windows needs on the SD card and do the update from there?

will be reading the Speccy .
I'm no pro but it looks to me that the notebook was made to store everything on the Cloud .
What is the exact make and model of this noteboook?
Maybe you can throw a larger SSD in it. ....

It was designed to store stuff in the cloud as well as the SD card. The SSD is on the motherboard so it can't be replaced.

I uninstalled MS Office which got me another 2.5 gig and the update is running. In addition I turned off hibernation and in services I turned off Windows Update to start automatically. It's now set to "disabled".

I bought this laptop directly from Microsoft! So, it's strange they would sell something with a SSD so small you can't even run Windows updates!

I've been around PCs a long time and am reasonably sophisticated so I've done all the normal things. I was curious about turning off the updates or installing them from another drive.

In my opinion.

Chief cause is that puny SSD. I'd do what you said and do a bloatware hunt for things that aren't used but taking up space.

Just back from a long errand. Let me share

That I had a 32GB EMMC tablet. But it also had a 500GB drive in the keyboard, battery and HDD base. Because of this I was able to use google to find out how to use this other drive to get the updates installed.

Because you don't have the space you must contact the maker to have them supply how to get the updates installed.

Your going to have a constant fight with disk space on that small ssd.

Start with.
Disk cleanup
Ccleaner
Limiting system restore size.
Look at the products that came installed and if not needed uninstall them.

I've turned off Windows update and use D: for the swapfile and have turned hibernation off. I'll just use it to give my presentations and will never update it or install any more programs (that can't be installed on D:)

Thanks to you all.

Here's what I found and did.

You can stop all updates by typing Services in the search box. Scroll down to Windows Update. Right click and select Properties. Set the startup type to Disabled using the drop down. Apply>OK.

It's just a slow process of uninstalling stuff, turning off stuff and find places where windows is squirreling away stuff.

Take a look in C: windows>logs.
