Update on Setup for Toshiba L45-S7409

THIS IS FOR THE "OUT-OF-BOX" SETUP OF
Toshiba L45-S7409 Notebook Computer
with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Edition

Decline McAfee Setup

Desktop items sent to Recycle Bin
(All items sent to Recycle Bin Together at once)

ON START MENU GO TO...

All Programs > Accessories >
Place shortcut to Notepad on Desktop
and create and temporarily store pwecomputersetuplog.txt
in Documents Folder
until creation of PWEngholm Folder in "pwengholm" subdirectory

Go to Control Panel and change to Classic View

Disable Synaptic Pointing Device
and remove tray icon from task bar
(Microsoft Optic Mouse Installed)

UNINSTALL FOLLOWING SOFTWARE IMMEDIATELY

McAfee Security Center
McAfee Programs:
Virus Scan
Personal Firewall
Anti-Spam
Privacy Service
Security

RESTART COMPUTER

Turn off Welcome Center run at startup

Go to Control Panel

Turn off User Account Control (UAC)

RESTART COMPUTER

Go to Contol Panel

Turn off AutoPlay for all media and devices

Change Folder Options ---
Always show menus - yes
Display the full path in the title bar (Classic folders only) - yes
Show hidden files and folders - yes
Hide extensions for known files types - no

Change Internet Properties ---
General -
Delete All Browsing History Immediately
Content -
Clear SSL state
turn off all AutoComplete
Programs -
Change HTML editing to Notepad
Advanced -
Browsing:
Close unused folders in History and Favorites* - yes
Notify when downloads complete - no
Security:
Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer* - yes
Allow active content to run in files on My Computer* - yes
Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid - yes
Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed - yes
Disable Phishing Filter - yes
*(Takes effect afer you restart Internet Explorer)

Change Java Control Panel ---
Turn off Check for Updates Automatically
Temporary Internet Files ---
Settings...
Keep temporary files on my computer - no
Delete Files...Delete Temporary Files - yes (delete all)

Change Personalization ---
Desktop Background...Select Dark Blue Solid Color (may be changed at discretion)
Turn off Screen Saver...Select (None)

Change Power Options ---
Require a password on wakeup - no
System Settings:
When I press the power button: on battery and Plugged in...Shutdown
When I close the lid: on battery and Plugged in...Shutdown
Edit power plan Settings:
Turn off the display/Put the computer to sleep:
on battery...10 minutes
Plugged in...Never

Change Windows Security Center ---
Security Essentials:
Firewall (normally on, unless installing software)
Automatic updating (off)
Malware protection (only Windows Defender on)
Other Security Settings (Internet security settings OK)
Change the way Security Center alerts me (Don't notify me and don't display the icon)

Change System ---
System Properties:
Advanced...Performance Options...Virtual Memory...Initial size (MB): 1521 MB --- Maximum size (MB): 5000 MB)
Remote Assistance Settings...Advanced (Allow the computer to be controlled remotely--- no)
Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer --- no
Advanced...Startup and Recovery (Write an event to the system log --- no)

RESTART COMPUTER

Go to Control Panel

Change Taskbar and Start Menu ---
Customize Start Menu:
Games (Don't display this item)
(UNINSTALL Google Desktop COMPLETELY)
RESTART COMPUTER
Toolbars:
Google Desktop --- no (to be uninstalled immediately)

NOTE: With Classic Start Menu Mode Network and Internet Explorer are displayed on the Desktop


ON START MENU GO TO...

Computer > SQ00425V02 (C:) > Program Data >
Delete the following Folder: McAfee

then...

ON START MENU GO TO...

pwengholm > AppData > Local > Google >
Delete the Following Folder: Google Desktop

Go to control Panel

Programs and Features ---
Turn Windows Games Feature OFF
Turn Removable Storage Management ON

UNINSTALL FOLLOWING SOFTWARE:
Napster
QuickBooks Financial Center

RESTART COMPUTER

Delete the following Folder:
Napster


ON START MENU GO TO...

Computer > SQ00425V02 (C:) > windows > System32
Send Shorcut to regedt32.exe to Desktop


OPEN REGISTRY EDITOR USING:
regedt32.exe

then...

GO TO:
Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE
Delete the follwing Folders:
McAfee
Napster
Google > Google Desktop


ON START MENU GO TO...

All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
Send Shortcut to Disk Cleanup to Desktop
Send Shortcut to Disk Defragmenter to Desktop
Turn off Scheduled Defragmentation...
REMEMBER TO DEFRAGMENT MANUALLY ON A REGULAR BASIS

CHECK ALL BOXES iN DISK CLEANUP FOR FILES TO DELETE
Proceed with deletion of Files Selected by Disk Cleanup...
Recycle Bin will automatically be emptied
When utilizing Disk Cleanup


RESTART COMPUTER

GO TO:
Internet Favorites Folder and Delete Following Shortcuts:
eMusic
Office Live
PhotoWorks
Shutterfly
Skype
Toshiba Games


OPEN REGISTRY EDITOR USING:
regedt32.exe
Export Registry Backup


GO TO: Control Panel > System > System Protection
Create a restore point (do so on regular basis to ensure system integrity)


NOTE: REMEMBER TO TURN OFF FIREWALL (IF NECESSARY)
AND UTILIZE "COMPATIBILITY WIZARD" (IF NECESSARY)
BEFORE INSTALLING APPROVED/COMPATIBLE
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE

CONNECT TO INTERNET...
