Thanks to someone else on this forum I replaced the text in my url.ini file ( In your grisoft folder or wherever you have AVG installed.)
Save your old file as url.old and create a new file in notepad with this:
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com
[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3
When you restart AVG you'll have three choices to download from instead of the default one.

Marianna. Those instructions are a bit much for me. I've messed up my computer enough recently trying to do things that have come out wrong.
AVG used to have 3 addresses. When did they change that?
I went to their site, but couldn't find exactly where to click to get the update manually. It's been 3 or 4 days since I was able to get any of their updates. My version is 6.0.601. Will it then just download the same as if it was automatic?
Pat
go to your contol centre to update manger and change the drop down to 1 day and re-check 1 day later.
this will cause AVG to scan for updates when you boot up and if there is an update available it will download it automatically.
note the default setting is 14 days. the drop down can be changed to 1 day.

Pat,
AVG changed from 3 servers to 1 server for the FREE download a while back - guess, it was around the time as the updates got MUCH smaller??
As you download manually - you have to put the update directly into your Grisoft > AVG > update folder !! then open AVG control center and let it finish the update.
Here are the latest updates:

scroll down !
I'm an amateur so I hope I don't step on any moderator's toes... With my browser window open to Marianna's tip: My Computer>Drive "C" (or whatever letter your hard drive is labeled)>Program Files>Grisoft>AVG6. Open URL.INI, copy text, open notepad, paste text and "save as" url.old in that same AVG6 folder. Copy text of Marianna's tip from the open browser window, open notepad, paste text and "save as" URL.INI. in the AVG6 folder. When it asks if you want to replace existing URL.INI, click Yes. Close everything and try updates. That was it and it's working great. Good Luck.
I wouldn't call you an amatuer, KevMo. Between Marianna's and your instructions I was finally able to understand how to change the INI files. I d/l the latest update and now have three servers to choose from. Thank you both very much.
Shirley,
I have to believe the Pro comes up with the info, the amateur just tries to figure out what in the heck to do with it.
I DID IT! I DID IT!. I hadn't thought of copy and paste, and otherwise, I knew I'd screw it up.
Thanks KevMo and Marianna.
Tomorow I'll do the update, which should by quite large by this time. (dial-up)
Pat
Thanks Marianna! Like some others I am becoming confused. Looks like AVG could make it a little simplier. ![]()
Not sure what I am to do with your instructions. To the best of my knowledge I have the latest AVG 6 Update (6.0.610 Virus Database=390)that was obtained manually. My only problem has been with the "Update Manager" being unable to connect to get an automatic update. I had assumed this was because of heavy demand for latest downloads. It worked before as late as once yesterday when I was finally able to d/l the one large update.
Please tell me if I am missing something.
Thanks,![]()

AVG 6 free has "normally" only ONE server to get your updates - what I had written down is to INCREASE the servers to three. (clicking on the little arrow )
Yeah, if you have ONLY one server - you have to wait as the server can't keep up - is overloaded !! If you only have ONE server as you click on the little arrow next to server - maybe it would be "wise" to change it to three?? This way you have a CHOICE which server you take ![]()
problem is figuring out the mechanics that you outlined.
Seems I do need the option of additional servers especially in times of high usage.
Thanks!
Glenn
as you have the 3 servers in it - take the www.grisoft.com - is the FASTEST !!!!! Happy downloading ![]()
