Upconversion?

Sep 4, 2008 11:26PM PDT

Can someone please explain the benefit of upconversion in a recevier, expecially after the switch to digital TV? Also - if I do not have an HDMI cable running from my TV to the receiver (just coax) then will I still get the benefit?

well are you talking about the digital switch next year????

1) that is ONLY for over the air (OTA), people that use antennas

2) digital does not mean that something is then HD

Upscaling is only available via HDMI, this goes same w/ all dvd & bd players too.

So are you saying that I get no benefit of having an upconverting receiver if I do not have a HDMI cable running to my tv? Wouldnt I supposedly get upconverts to 720 and 1080i?

Upconverting Vs. upscaling

You most certainly can upconvert without HDMI. Such as my AVR upconverting from coax or rca in, to component out, which is better.
Upscaling I believe does need HDMI and it remains or becomes a digital signal. Coax or rca jacks to component is analog, but the three main colors are seperated thus creating a nicer picture.
