Yes there is a legal side and here, in the USA our gov has thrown in the towel it seems.
Did you try nomorerobo? http://www.nomorobo.com/
I've been receiving somewhat benign, although annoying texts and calls for about 3 mos. The person is using some type of program to disguise their number and it comes up as "unknown name", but my area code, in a town usually about 2 hrs from me. I've blocked the number, and as soon as I do, the person just changes to a new one.
The texts say things like 'be careful', "go slow", "be cautious", "answer my call", "want to talk?" "why are you afraid?", "figure it out yet?", "we just want to help" etc. Never anything specific, and nothing about me or my life specifically.
I've answered the call a few times, said hello several times and no one responds. When I talk/listen it seems like I'm talking into a dead phone.. there is no noise/static on the other end... nothing. I hung up each time after about 15 sec. When I don't answer, the call usually goes to vm, where nothing is ever said, and again... it's typically just dead air. One time I believe this person pocket dialed me. The vm was less that 20 sec and while very muffled, there was definitely a guys voice at the beginning and a woman's voice in the background.
The calls are from 5-15/day and the texts are less frequent... 1-2 every few days. When this first started, I talked to a friend who is a retired officer who told me not to engage the person and just ignore them and that hopefully they'd go away. That hasn't happened.
I have a couple of questions. First, in my defense, I admit to knowing nothing about the technical side of electronics and gadgets.. which is what brought me here -
- Not knowing about these programs that can disguise your number, would it take a certain amount of time for a phone to connect to another phone during a call? As mentioned earlier, I've answered a few calls and when I spoke it was like talking into a dead phone... just nothing there. With the program they are using, would it take longer than 15 sec to make a connection before we could talk?
- If I were to answer a call (wait longer or for a connection) or respond to a text, is there any way there could then be any connection from cell phone to cell phone by engaging this person? (I don't want this stranger being able to track me in any way at all)
- Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions what else I could maybe do? I realize it is harassment and there could be a legal side to this, but I really don't want to get into all of that. Also, changing my number isn't a possibility given my job. Thanks for any thoughts.... much appreciated.
