Unwanted searchbars in internet explorer and other problems.

by rcgyuk / April 8, 2004 8:16 AM PDT

I am trying to sort out a friends PC, which is running windows xp.

There appears to be a program running which keeps changing the home page away from the desired home page, to other locations.

There also appear to be 2 extra search bars at the top of the screen, 'mywebsearch' and 'perfectnav'. So far these have resisted all attemts to get rid of them.

I suspect there are other unwanted programs running, because every so often I keep getting windows coming up asking me to click yes to finish installation so I can access xxx sites I don't want.

How can I clean this pc up, and remove all the surplus programmes that shouldn't be there?

In windows 98, if you brought up task manager, you could see all the processes running, and spot the dodgy ones, then search the registry and delete all reference to them, but in xp, there are so many running I can't recognise the ones that shouldn't be there.

Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

Robert

Robert,

Please click on the link below and run the free spyware and virus removal tools that Bob Proffitt has listed there. (Specifically Ad-Aware, Spybot, and CWShredder. You might start with CWShredder since it's the easiest to download and run initially.) They should remove the spyware that is causing your issue:

Hope this helps.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
