Unrelenting Error Message

Feb 4, 2004 11:43AM PST

I keep getting an error message as follows:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.
_______________________________________

If you were in the middle of something, the information your were
working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem>

We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve
internet explorer. We will treat this report as confidential and
anonymous."

To see what data this error report contains, Click here

(Then there are two buttons) Send Error Report and Dont't send.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I never send it because I do not trust the message. However, where I
used to just hit "Don't Send" I could go on with using the computer as
if the message never occurred. Now, however, I cannot go online for
anything and the window always comes up, and it will not go away.

When I "click here" the error signature is:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2899.1106
Mod Name: winshow.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1
Offset: 00009901

The following files will be included in this error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER773.tmp.dir00\appcomp.txt

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Can anyone explain how I can fix the problem? What is the problem?

A Google search reveals winshow.dll crashing IE is probably a spyware problem. Download, update, and then run Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, CWShredder, Stinger, and do an online virus scan. Do all 5 til you get it fixed. Sometimes one will catch something that one misses.
All of these downloads can be found with a Google search. Good Luck.

Thank you Sheila,

My problem is that I cannot link to those websites, or any other websites, due to this "Unrelenting Error Message". When I try, I get the same message pop-up.

I can link to these sites on my other compter, but that does not do any good for the one that is infected.

Any suggestions?

is there any way to get those programs some way to the compuer with the connection problem. Sitting on it and doing nothing isn't getting you anywhere.

Please read the article, "Adware.Winshow."

The hardware angle.

A nice person already noted the Pest issue.

At 1G of RAM and a 3.0 GHz P4, I would remove the case cover and run on one stick of RAM to sniff out if this is a hardware issue. Repeat. Leave the case cover off.

I'd like a more complete hardware list, but a 450 Watt Power supply is what I would fit on the average 3GHz box.
