Unplug and replug monitor while computer on

Nov 25, 2006 11:12AM PST

I just found that my youngster's friend unplugged and replugged the monitor on her computer without turning the computer off. The monitor no longer works on it. The computer has a Radeon 128 card. Is it possible that the card is bad or that the monitor is bad? I haven't tried either in another one due to fear I'll mess up more hardware.

PC powers on as does monitor but it shows in sleep mode. Can't see if video card is working or not.

Suggestions on safely testing to solve problem are appreciated.

PC is Intel 700mHz with XP SP2.

Thanks,
RON C

After decades of doing this on the test bench....

I fear that if that could kill a monitor I think I would have smoked one. I'll write that didn't kill it.

-> Look at the connector and check for a bent pin.

Since this is a 700Mhz, its somewhat dated. plus, since the kids replugged more than once and why it was done is because what you're experiencing now, a faulty monitor or card. More than likely the monitor is bad and the best test is to installed elsewhere and see if it works, as well as the card(reseat it at least). I do find constant replugs do bent/break pins, so inspect those on the monitor cord as well as any 'pushed-in'. Since, it doesn't beep away to suggest a video card problem, I lean towards a bad monitor. AND yes monitors do become iffy as they work and then don't work, just replace repair is too costly.
