Unnatural Motion quality in 120 HZ?

Mar 27, 2009 8:42AM PDT

On my new 120 HZ Samsung LN46A860, anything shot digitally looks great, but films, even old films, take on an unnatural crispness of movement, as if they were shot digitally. This is true even with the Auto-Motion feature disabled.

I previously owned a 60 HZ Samsung LCD, and was completely satisfied with the picture/motion quality. Is it a refresh rate issue? I don't watch much sports (where I hear the higher refresh rate is really beneficial). Mostly I just want my movies to look like movies, not high-end soap operas.

Would I be better off with a lower refresh rate? Or is it something else?

120HZ

They take on this look because even though your settings for 120hz( tru- motion)is off, the TV still send it through the video processor. The processor basically strips the filters and effects like film grain and other post production work out. Leaving the image looking sterile. I think that the panel is always at 120hz, it all depends on the after effects you are looking Standard, Smooth, etc...

Are they Blu-Rays?
Apr 4, 2010 9:49AM PDT

Hi there, don't know if this helps. But I had a similar problem to this one. I just bought a tv that supports something called "24hz output", which is supposed to match the source of how the blu-ray disc was encoded to your tvs source, so you lose no picture quality. however, it tended to make the picture 'soap opera-esque' much like 120hz does. Basically because it doesn't always work as intended. So if you're using a PS3 you can turn that setting off in the Video Settings menu, and you can also turn it off on your tv, (I think it's called Real Cinema mode, at least it is on my LG tv) and it should fix the 'soap opera' problem. Other than that, I can't think of what the problem is. Sorry.

Soap Opera Effect on TV - HELP!
Jul 2, 2010 8:31AM PDT

I just bought a Samsung 46", 1080p/120Hz/LED-LCD HDTV and I cannot get passed the fake look of the picture. It looks as though I'm watching a cheap movie. Both the TV and even Blu Ray look terrible. I suspect that it is the settigns because noone would want this sort of picture and it did not look like this in the store. Can anyone tell me where to start the adjustments? It seems that it has something to do with the motion - well, that's what other posts seem to indicate. I returned a Sony TV last week because the picture was terrible and Sony said that they had to send someone out to fix it. It was 6 days old. Why is this so complicated?! Thanks.
