Unlocking 3 network phones

Hello. I have an LG Viewty on 3 that I want to sell on Ebay but realize I'll get more for it if it's unlocked. I bought an unlocked Motorola (KRZR) that was on O2 but wouldn't accept my 3 SIM card. However, I have also have an unlocked 3 network RAZR V3X that does take an O2 card so assume unlocked 3 phones work with other network SIM cards but 3 SIMS don't work in other network unlocked phones.

Is that the case or is it just the way they are unlocked? If so, I'm looking for the safest, not the cheapest, way to get my Viewty unlocked. Thanks.
