Unknown problem on desktop!! - need help

Hi guys,

Well I am experiencing a problem at the moment on my desktop computer (Dell dimension 2400) that I cant seem to put my finger on.

I recently formatted the HD as my system was painfully slow and everything seemed fine after that until my internet connection went down.

Upon exploring device manager i noticed that approx 5-6 items were listed in the unknown devices part, my ethernet controller was amongst them so that explains the internet problem (now using USB connection)it seems they are all controllers of some kind i.e. Audio controller etc....What would cause my controllers to become (Unknown Devises)?

More puzzling was the fact now that when I try to start up the PC the HDD ceases to load windows after the Windows XP logo screen
I managed to load Windows after loosing my rag with the damn thing and yanked the USB device cables at the back of the Tower but from time to time I experience a Keyboard failure or my Mouse becomes inactive.

Would you recommend me re-formatting the HDD again or is it my Motherboards controllers playing up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

your Operating System, this will be a general (and correct) assessment. Windows does not have drivers for most peripherals. Did you install said drivers?
