What causes the error messsage "unknown file format" when I try to open a .jpeg file in windows explorer?

The file could be corrupt. Try it in other software like IRFANVIEW

If the image is available on a web site, supply the URL.

This only happens when with Microsoft Photoeditor.
Irfanview works very well.
Thanks Bob. I switched to XP now and have another world of stuff to try to learn. I suspected corrupt files in 98 for other reasons as well.

Just shows that one does more JPEG formats than the other...

Try renaming the extension from

JPEG to JPG


I too fave encountered similar problems, when a
file was downloaded from web site or e-mail
attachment

If it doesn't work re-named it back to JPEG
