Uninstalling/Repairing MS Office 2000

Feb 13, 2004 3:54AM PST

Hello,

My operating system is Windows XP Pro. From the past few days, MS Word and Excel programs in my computer are giving problems. When I tried to repair or uninstall Office 2000, it just refuses to go. I get an error message, "Error 1311. Source file not found: OFFICE1.CAB. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." The OFFICE1.CAB file is very much there on the disk; only the installation/repair program is unable to read it, I think.

Perhaps, I'd have accidentally removed a critical file of Office 2000 while uninstalling some other software or something. Now, can anyone suggest how I can overcome this problem and re-instalOffice 2000, please?

Thank you.

I downloaded ORK Toolbox, but it's also not able to uninstall or install/repair Office 2000. I think the problem seems to be much more serious than I originally thought, because I still get the same message, i.e., Error 1311: OFFICE1.CAB file not to be found.

Would it be all right if I 'Delete' each component like MS Word, Excel and then try to instal Office 2000 again? If there are any duplicate files, ORK Toolbox can remove such redundant files, I think.

Any suggestion is welcome, please.

If you have your original install disk you can re-install office 2000, when you put the disk in it will ask you what do you want to do, repair, reinstall etc just respond accordingly and follow directions.

The removal tool from the ORK.

I've used it to clean out old Office installs so to get a fresh start. Your post of "it's also not able to uninstall or install/repair Office 2000" is correct since the ORK tool is just a removal tool and not an install tool. Install is something the Office 2000 CD offers. Try that.

If you do get an error message after use of the office removal wizard, a reboot and a fresh install, then ther error message should be examined.

BEFORE WE GO ONE STEP FURTHER, your error message is too similar to one I encountered in a situation that outraged one person. The copy of office they had was an OEM version that was bundled with a machine. They kept that CD, but couldn't get it to install. The OEM version was marked for that machine and there was something truly odd about it in it was locked to the machine in question.

At least we could install Open Office, but they seemed upset that the license didn't extend to any other machine.

My apologies for the delay in replying. Actually I was away from Hyderabad.

You're very right. The CD is OEM that came along with my IBM computer. I think you've put your finger on the actual problem. However, I don't know how it was solved because, when I was away, the service people from the supplier's shop have re-installed the Office 2000.

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Shall be seeing you at this forum from now on, but hopefully not in similar circumstances.

Once again thank you.

Despite your Office XP issue, a simple repair procedure will fix most issues.

To repair MS Office XP:

Quit all programs that are running.

Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel .

In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click your Office 2000 or Office XP installation, and then click Add/Remove .

In the Office 2000 or Office XP Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office .

In the Reinstall/Repair Office 2000 or Office XP dialog box, click to select Repair errors in my Office installation , and then click Finish .

When the Office repair is finished, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are prompted, click Yes and allow Windows to restart.

redd, why suggest anything since IBM fixed the problem?
