Uninstalling Mcafee Virus Scan 7.0 and Installing Mcafee 8.0

Dec 13, 2003 8:33AM PST

When I was uninstalling McAfee 7.0, a message popping up saying Internal error 2715.7346_ALOGEXPL.eng. This popped up before it was completely uninstalled. When installing McAfee 8.0, it said that another virus scan was still in use. Now whenever I restart my computer a message comes up saying Avsynmgr has caused an error in unknown. What is going on and what is Avsymgr?

McAfee has been a thorn in the side of many users. I would sugest using System restore to go back to a time before the aborted uninstall and trying again.

Please explain the System Restore process. I am using Windows ME. Windows ME is a "Thorn" in my side. What info can you give me about Windows 2000? Would it be better to run it with Mcafee? Or what virus scan do you prefer? Thanks, Becca

ME and XP have a feature called System Restore. Every time you add or delete software or Windows Updates(and regularly scheduled intervals) Windows creates a restore point. Simply open System Restore and tell it to restore to an earlier time. Then look for the point at which you did the install and restore to the next older point. Any other software and changes made will be reversed, but all new files/emails/etc. will remain. Should be in start/programs/acessories/system tools. I used to recommend Norton Anti Virus(stand alone program)but I have ehard bad things about 2004. When my 2003 Norton subscription runs out I am switching to Grisoft's AVG. Its available as freeware or a paid version.

System Restore isn't a cure-all

Only certain file types are kept in a restore point - mainly program executables and registry files. It's fairly decent at backing off a program install but not so good at backing off a program uninstall - especially if there is an install log required for a future uninstall. It may work to some extent (that error message about the missing file should go away). However, it may not help with the V7 uninstall problem - that's looking like a manual uninstall will be required. Another solution might be to uninstall V8, install V7, use automatic uninstall of V7 and then install V8 (assuming V7 uninstall is clean). There's gotta be a better way to uninstall these programs...

I would also like to know why this message keeps popping up everytime I reboot. It started when I was trying to uninstall Mcafee 7.0 and install Mcafee 8.0. The message says, Avsynmgr has caused an error in <unknown>. Avsynmgr will now close. What is Avsynmgr?

Process File: avsynmgr or avsynmgr.exe
Process Name: McAfee VirusScan Synchronization Manager
Description: Synchronizes the workstation?s virus definitions with those collected from McAfee?s site by the central fileserver on network versions of McAfee VirusScan.
Company: Network Associates, Inc.

Due to the partial uninstall, you have deleted a file but not the registry references to it. You need to fully uninstall Mcafee (7 and Cool and then reinstall 8.

Uninstall V8 first and then run throught the steps in Manual Uninstall of McAfee VirusScan 7.0 (Windows 98/ME only)

I am sorry to say, but, I don't understand the manual uninstall of the virus scan through the MS DOS method. I don't know whether to to hit enter after each entry. Such as CD\ do I hit enter then type DC C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM then hit enter again and add the next set of letters and numbers. I NEED HELP! (sorry I lost it for a moment lol)

Yes you need to press enter after each command. If you get error messages (step 4), no offense intended but you may want to get someone more experienced with computers to do the manual install. Cleaning up the registry is not for the inexperienced. You can do some serious damage to your PC if you remove/update the wrong items in the registry.

Run MSIEXEC to Attempt a Forced Uninstall

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Highlight Programs then click on MS-DOS Prompt. A black window will then appear on the screen with a blinking cursor.
3. Type the following commands into the keyboard:
CD\
CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
MsiExec.exe /X{E4DC62CE-5F95-11D6-B254-00C04FF4B435}
exit
4. If the operation is successful you will need to restart your computer. If McAfee VirusScan is successfully uninstalled you do not need to complete the remaining steps in this document. If you receive error messages or find that McAfee VirusScan was not completely removed then follow the steps below to manually remove the program.

From the beginning....

Read http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/daily/20031008.html about uninstalling Mcafee. It's not easy and not for me to tell you to press enter after each command. Sadly, they didn't make a "do this, then that" procedure for everyone to follow.

http://www.mcafee-at-home.com/support/default.asp is mcafee's support site.

While you can yell at me about what I write next, I can only offer that I found the combination of Windows ME and Mcafee to be toxic and never can suggest this combo to anyone. You may try, but support is best sought from Mcafee.

------------- Take deep breath ---------------

Ok, here's what I used on my last Windows ME box.

-> Free AVG from http://www.grisoft.com

Very stable and without the annoyances of the above.
