Question

uninstalling MacKeeper

Nov 6, 2011 1:54AM PDT

I downloaded MacKeeper and don't want it, so I put it in the trash and can't remove it because MacKeeper Helper is in use. I didn't buy it.

Answer
Try to log out and then log in back

Usually this helps. Also see if in your login items (accounts or users/groups in system preferences) anything related to MacKeeper is checked. If yes, uncheck before logging out.

Don't understand what you mean by logging out! Shutdown my computer and then start again and see if MacKeeper is still there? Is that what you mean?

Go to System Preferences
Nov 6, 2011 4:27AM PST

the "gear" thing down in the dock
Go to Accounts or Users & Groups (whichever one you have)
Single click on your account in the left hand pane
click the padlock, if necessary, to unlock the panel
In the right hand window, still with your account selected, click on Login Items
If there is anything in that list that relates to MacKeeper, click it to highlight it and click the "-" button
That will remove it from the list.
Repeat as necessary.
On completion, close the window and go to the Apple menu at the top left of the screen.
Choose Log Out
Once you have logged out, and you see the login screen, log back in again.
MacKeeper should now allow you to delete it.
If not, restart and try to delete it.

to help you out

I downloaded MacKeeper and uninstalled it very easily. Locate the MacKeeper.app in the application folder. Drag it to the Trash. The window will appear asking for your administrator password (the one you use to log in to your computer and to install new software). Type it, hit OK and you will see another window with uninstaller. Click in the right big window and type some reason why you don't want it. The n at the bottom of the window click the button "uninstall MacKeeper". After a few seconds the window disappears. You can now empty Trash.

I pretty well followed your instructions but had earlier put MacKeeper in the trash but it would not empty because MacKeeper Helper was in use. I shut the computer down and when I turned it back on, the trash can emptied. So far, I can't find it anywhere now.

If you did what you say you did,
Nov 6, 2011 8:45PM PST

in your first post, you should have been presented with a dialog box asking why you wanted to uninstall MacKeeper.
Once you filled that in, you would have seen another dialog box with an uninstall button.

I automatically put MacKeeper in the trash can. It's gone now and my reply to macnerd 10 is not shown!! I logged out then back in and the trash can emptied.
Thanks everyone for all your assistance.
Great website CNET
I thought MacKeeper was good to download until I checked it out after I downloaded it.

Wanting to clean out my Mac I downloaded the same program only to find out, it cleaned more of my Mac than I had expected. It deleted files that were originally installed before I bought the Mac. You need to go into your
HD and look for the file. Problem is once you "think" you have uninstalled it from your Mac. The darn pop-up keeps appearing. I do hope you have better luck than I.
