Question

Uninstalled USB drivers, mouse/keyboard not working...

Aug 18, 2016 5:50PM PDT

Am on windows 7, is a computer I built myself.

So, long story short, was trying to fix my iPhone not syncing to my computer and I overwrote my USB hub in device manager with Apple Mobile Device drivers...now my USB ports don't work.

Sorta lucked out that I had kept a full install of windows on my second HDD, so am booting off of that now and things work, but would love to be able to switch back to my SSD.

Any way that I can fix the drivers on the SSD via my HDD so that I can use my mouse and keyboard again?

Answer
That's not right.

Here, if I do that, Windows reinstalls basic drivers on the next reboot. Try booting to Safe Mode and then rebooting.

On older PCs I have to use a PS2 keyboard to change the BIOS to support USB LEGACY KEYBOARD and Mice.

I know :|

Yeah, have tried that several times.

I think because I replaced the driver instead of deleting it, it doesn't want to replace the driver on a re-install.

Is there any way that I can manually delete said driver now? I still do have full access to the SSD I normally boot from, just not sure where said driver that I messed up is located.

I can get an older PS2 mouse or whatever tomorrow, but would quite rather fix this now.

I would have to use System Restore

Basic Windows Safe Mode drivers should work unless there is something bizarre about this PC. I had an really OLD PC that would do this IF I had the BIOS at defaults. I would have to fish out the PS2 keyboard to fix it.

There was not other way on that machine. Good news? I gifted it to a college student but supplied the PS2 keyboard, just in case.

I've tried safe mode, and for some reason that doesn't seem to be changing anything.

Can try to do a system restore, but am at least going to try to get a PS2 peripheral tomorrow, hopefully that should work to be able to uninstall the incorrect driver on the SSD when I boot from it. Else, that's likely the easiest option....

Really no way that I can just go to the System folder on the SSD and just remove the files manually?

I do still have access to it, am just not sure where the drives I'm looking for are, or what variation of usbXXXXX.YYY they might be

So no BIOS USB legacy support?

That's what I found my last old PC needed.

Maybe?

So first, thanks for hanging on and helping me troubleshoot this, really appreciate it.

Am not entirely sure what 'legacy support' means exactly. I've seen it in the BIOS, and I think it's enabled. At least, I think I saw it in the USB 3.0 section as 'enabled'. Not sure it was there for anything 2.0 related, but if so am pretty sure that would be enabled too.

Mouse and Keyboard *do* work in the BIOS, but lose control when windows loads on the SSD. Mouse/Keyboard don't appear to work when using the 3.0 ports on the back of the machine.

Worth a shot.

Remember I can't find the exact PC we are working on. Since the BIOS does work and you never told me there is no PS/2 keyboard/mouse port, that's what I continue to think what the issue is. Just like my old PC.

Try all the BIOS USB and Keyboard/mice options. You can always go back.
