Uninstall MSN Messenger 4.7

Feb 20, 2004 2:29PM PST

I'm using XP pro. MSN Messenger 4.7 included in there. But I want MSN 6.0 (or the latest) and I already install it. How can I uninstall MSN Messenger 4.7 in XP Pro

MSN Messanger comes with XP Pro as a component. To remove it, go to Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs, then on the left panel click at Add/Remove Windows components. Uncheck the last item.

BTW, were you not able to 'overwrite' the old 4.7 with the new 6.0 when you installed the new version ?

I have been wanting to remove MSN Messenger as well, I just want to get this right, do you uncheck and highlight the last item to remove, or do you have a check mark in the last item? Thank you. Ann

Other methods of uninstalling Windows Messenger 4.7:

Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger.

OR

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and click OK.
You will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

Or you can simply deactivate it:

Open MSN | Tools | Options | Preferences | Uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts."

Yet another way is to rename the EXE so it won't start.
Go to C:\Program Files\Messenger.

David,

Thanks for the clear instructions. I used the ending advice and de-activated Windows Messenger 4.7. Outlook Express seems to be ok... I have worked with this "cottonpicking" thing for some time. Very relieved to have MSN 6.1 with it's new features.

Happy

Glenn
