Unidentified Network/Internet Connection Problem

by fresh_tech / February 6, 2011 10:04 AM PST

I have a relatively new Gateway Windows 7 laptop and can't establish an internet connection through my ethernet port. My older Dell XP laptop can get an internet connection through its ethernet port, so I don't think the problem is my cable modem or ethernet cable.

I also purchased a new Belkin N router that can't make a connection between it and my cable modem. My old Netgear G router works fine. (I thought the N router would work better than the G router.)

I checked the ethernet properties on my new laptop and it says "This device is working properly", although I still tried disabling/enabling it, but that didn't work.

This seems like something that would be easy to fix, but I'm too new at this stuff to understand what to try. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
