Resolved Question

Unexpected shutdown windows 7 pro

Jan 13, 2012 3:53AM PST

A few days ago I upgraded my Acer aspire one netbook from xp home to windows 7 pro using a custom install from a usb flash drive (loaded with an official version from the VLSC). the installation went without problem, and no data was lost. But soon after installation, my netbook started restarting at seemingly random points. The series of events is as follows: at any point during use, it will flash up a bluescreen for about a second, and then shut down, straight after it will start up normally, i sign in and get the following message:
windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown
problem signature:
problem event name BlueScreen
OS version 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.78
locale id 2057
bcp1 (i wasnt able to record this number, but next time it happens, i will)
bcp2 c0000185
bcp3 2a1eb860
bcp4 86b66d7e
os version 6_1-7601
(i think there is another section here which i was not able to record as print screen is not taking proper screenshots, next time it happens i will get the full message)
files that might describe this problem:
C:\windows\minidump\011312-17503-10.dmp
C:\users\benjamin\appdata\local\temp\wer-43290-0.sysdata.xml

Sounds normal to me. Why?

I can't find what you did after you installed Windows. That is, the 10 or so drivers from the machine's maker. If you checked if the maker has some BIOS update needed for Windows 7 and even if the machine is supported on 7.

The post reads as if you expected Microsoft to do that for you?

Bios update
Jan 13, 2012 4:37AM PST

thanks for the reply, i checked the acer website for a bios update, there is a download, but i was hesitant to install it as it could have adverse effects if it is not the correct version, should i go ahead and install it? before installing win 7 i did check compatibility, it supports xp and 7, but not vista, as for driver updates, it went to control panel, device manager, and went through each device doing right click, update driver software, about 5 or so updates were installed

Answer
Notebook XP to Win 7

Could be problems ahead.

First of all, to prevent the system from rebooting automatically whenever it BSODs, (Blue Screen of death), head over to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings.

In the new window click the "Startup and Recovery" button and in the new window remove the tick for "Automatic restart".

This will prevent Win 7 from restarting when it fails with a blue screen, and this gives you the opportunity to read the BSOD to find out what application or file is causing the fault.

You cannot exit this screen and the only way to continue is to do a hard shutdown, (press and keep holding down the power switch until the system shuts down, then wait a few seconds and reboot).

You say you updated the drivers for Win 7 but where did you get these drivers from? Microsoft doesn't supply drivers so I assume you obtained them from the makers web site.

I just wonder if this XP Notebook is underpowered for Win 7, and/or if there are no suitable drivers for this upgrade.

Tell us more about this BSOD the next time it happens.

Alternatively, head over to the Event Viewer, (Start > Search > Event Viewer and select the top option under Programs), and look in both the "Application" and "System" logs under "Windows logs" for more information.

You are looking for a file that seems to be faulting. You are looking for the "Log name", Event ID, the "Source" and any details just under the "General " tab.

ok, i have done that, next time it happens, i will take a photo and upload it, i did check the compatibility with acer.com, and the netbook supports xp and 7, but not vista, i updated the drivers by going to control panel, device manager and individually checking for updates, about 5 or so were installed

Thats good

If Acer says it is compatible with Win 7 and you have all the right drivers from them then that's good.

If it happens again, just a note about uploading images. We can't do that in these forums so we upload to some Image Hosting site like ImageShack, Flickr or Photobucket, or your own preferred site, then paste the link to that in these forums.

Good luck.

I will

I installed the bios download from acer, I was initially reluctant to do it as the acer website advises against doing so unless advised to do so, it did not cause any problems, and I have not had the issue since, so perhaps that has solved it Happy

That's great news

Updating the BIOS is always a concern but if it has solved your problems then that is good news.

I hope it has, and thanks for reporting back.
